I created this work based on the motif from a LED star-shaped Taiwanese betel nut* shop sign, formerly ubiquitous, but now disappearing as Taipei gentrifies. I created a miniature streetscape on a rainy day, with the light from the sign reflecting off the road. Among the star-shaped signs, a small red and blue electrical signboard displays a conversation in Chinese between a man and woman about the cityscape. Gradually, the lights come on and then go out one by one. As a passing foreigner, I have no meaningful opinion to offer about the changing landscape of a foreign country.
*(Areca catechu, or betel nuts, are a narcotic stimulant palm seed traded throughout SE Asia for at least 3500 years. Betel nuts tend to have a generally unsavory image, as they are often sold by women hired for their sexual attractiveness to primarily working class male consumers.)
